Load Cells Basics: The Top Things You Didn’t Know

Curiosity about the weight of an object is very common, especially when business operations involve import and export. However, have you ever considered how weight fluctuates over time? Have you ever wanted to detect something's presence by checking the load or strain on the surface? This article is an effort to shed some light on the issue and provide a guide to the world of load cells and their various varieties.

What is a load cell?

Load cells are one of the most significant parts of digital weighing scales and devices. It is also called a sensor or transducer because it is responsible for transforming the force acting on it into a measurable electronic signal. It is commonly used as a component of balances and weighing scales because it provides very accurate measurements while remaining non-intrusive. That is why the demand for China load cells is so high in the industrial and automotive sectors.

Origin of load cells

Traces of a load cell can be found in the mid-19th century. It became popular when Sir Charles Wheatstone invented the "Wheatstone Bridge" by making a bridge circuit that had the power to calculate electrical resistances. The device was commonly used in laboratories because it helped measure resistance that was generated in strain gauges.

Over time, the bonded resistance wire strain gauge was created in the middle of the 20th century. It could also be modified when using mechanical scales or stand-alone cells with the Wheatstone bridge. Consequently, it was being used as a sensor that could calculate dynamic and static strains. Moreover, because of their compact size and easy-to-use features, load cells have continued to evolve over time. Besides, now it can be used to calculate several amounts associated with strain, including acceleration, force, torque, and pressure.

Functioning of load cells

The process of calculating output is different for different types of load cells. When it comes to calculating output, the hydraulic load cells depend on the force of the internal filling fluid. On the other hand, a strain gauge load cell transforms force pressure into calculable output with the help of a gauge that is connected to beams or the load cell system. If pressure is applied to the load cell, the system distorts as per the weight put on the device. Consequently, it leads to the system’s electrical resistance, which can be calculated.

Types of load cells

Load cells have been designed to calculate electrical output in several ways to meet the particular weighing requirements. Here are some of the popular China load cells that are mostly used in contemporary times.

  • Strain gauge

It’s a widely used load cell that is based on a spring mechanism where a strain gauge is installed.

  • Pancake

It is known for its low-profile tension and compression load cells, which have a large surface area to absorb the shock of loads. It is generally used in the automotive, material testing, and industrial sectors.

  • S type

S-type cells are also referred to as Z-beam or S-beam load cells. It is named S-shaped because it has a small S-shaped design. They are usually used for calculating suspended loads.

  • Shear beam

This is a load cell that is known for its rectangle shape, which generally has double retaining bolts on one side for additional support and load cells on the other. It is considered best for industrial environments as well as for compression force testing requirements.

  • Double-ended

In comparison to the normal shear beam, the double-ended load cells have support on both sides, and the load is put on the middle of the load cell.

  • Single point

Also known as platform load cells, they support the building of a machine or weighing scale via a single load cell. You can find them on most small to medium-sized platform scales.

  • Button

These are small compression strain gauges that are considered ideal for working in places with limited space. In this load cell, the bottom is generally bolted while the pressure is applied to the button on the top.

  • Bending beam

A widely used load cell and bending beam are versatile, small devices that are best for usage in areas with little space. They are considered mainly for commercial measurement needs.

  •      Hydraulic

It is a type of load cell that calculates weight as a function of force variation. Once the load is positioned on the load cell, it can produce additional force that can be calculated by an electrical transducer.

Conclusion

Load cells come in various types and has different usages. Ifyou buy a load cell, always make sure to buy it from a reputed company. Make sure to check their reviews and ratings before making any decisions.

What Causes a Load Cell to Malfunction?

Load cells are at the heart of every weighing operation. A digital load cell is the most crucial component in most of the weighing scales used today. From a simple bathroom scale to advanced weighbridge systems, load cells determine the weight of any item placed on these scales.  They convert the mechanical force put by a load into electrical output to display it on the weighing indicator. Thus, without a working load cell, weighing scales would show inaccurate readings. No matter what the industry or application is, be it a crane scale manufacturer or retail scale manufacturer, load cells are essential for the functionality of all types of weighing scales. But at the same time, a load cell can also be very vulnerable. In this blog, we look at a few common causes that can disrupt the working of a load cell. Overloading Capacity Load cells can get damaged due to the overloading of a weighing scale. All scales in the market come with a maximum loading capacity. The load cells...
